About Biodiversity of Shergaon: A Himalayan Natural Heritage

Biodiversity of Shergaon: A Living Treasure of the Eastern Himalayas Nestled in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, Shergaon is a Himalayan village surrounded by rich natural landscapes, forest ecosystems, and a remarkable diversity of life. Its biodiversity reflects the ecological richness of the Eastern Himalayas, where variations in altitude, climate, and vegetation create habitats for numerous species of plants, birds, insects, fungi, and wildlife. A Rich World of Flora The forests around Shergaon support a variety of plant life, from towering trees and shrubs to seasonal flowers, mosses, lichens, and medicinal plants. Rhododendrons add seasonal colour to the landscape, while other native plants contribute to the ecological balance of the forest. The wider region of Arunachal Pradesh is renowned for its exceptional floral diversity, including orchids, medicinal plants, ferns, and numerous other species. These plants provide food and shelter for wildlife while supporting essential ecological processes. ## Birds and Wildlife Shergaon's forested surroundings offer opportunities to observe the diverse birdlife and wildlife of the Eastern Himalayas. Birds occupy different ecological niches, while mammals and other animals depend on healthy forests for food, shelter, and movement. The wider Shergaon landscape is also associated with important wildlife habitats. The nearby Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is recognised for its rich birdlife and biodiversity, making the region particularly interesting for birdwatchers, naturalists, and wildlife enthusiasts. The Small Wonders of Nature Biodiversity is not limited to large animals and colourful birds. The forest floor, decaying logs, damp rocks, and stream edges support an extraordinary range of smaller life forms. Wild mushrooms and other fungi play an important role in breaking down decaying organic matter and recycling nutrients. Mosses and lichens contribute to the character of the forest environment, while insects and other invertebrates support pollination, decomposition, and food webs. Observing these often-overlooked organisms reveals how every component of the ecosystem contributes to the functioning of the natural world. ## Traditional Knowledge and Conservation Shergaon’s natural heritage is closely connected with the lives and knowledge of its local community. Traditional practices, observations of seasonal changes, and familiarity with local plants and animals reflect generations of interaction with the surrounding environment. The Thungeey Gonpu (Kamcho Yaam) Biodiversity Heritage Site in Shergaon illustrates the close relationship between cultural heritage and nature. This officially recognised site is surrounded by forests that support diverse vegetation, including rhododendrons and medicinal plants. Protecting such places helps conserve biological diversity while recognising the importance of local knowledge and cultural values. Why Biodiversity Conservation Matters Healthy ecosystems provide essential services, including soil protection, nutrient cycling, water regulation, and habitats for wildlife. However, changes in land use, habitat disturbance, pollution, and unsustainable resource use can put pressure on biodiversity. Responsible nature tourism, habitat protection, careful documentation of species, and community participation can contribute to the long-term conservation of Shergaon's natural heritage. Discover the Living Heritage of Shergaon From birds moving through the forest canopy to mushrooms growing on fallen logs, every encounter reveals another part of Shergaon's ecological story. Biodiversity invites us to look beyond the landscape and appreciate the countless living organisms that sustain it. By documenting, understanding, and protecting this natural wealth, we can help ensure that Shergaon's forests continue to support life and inspire future generations.

SMT. TSERING DEMO THUNGON PRESERVES SHERDUKPEN WEAVING TRADITIONS By- Lobsang Tashi Thungon

Traditional art is preserved not merely through words, but through continuous practice in our day-to-day lives. The rich heritage and legacies of our forefathers have survived because of a few extraordinary individuals who dedicated their lives to keeping these traditions alive. Among such inspiring personalities is Smt. Tsering Demo Thungon, now 76 years old, who has been preserving the traditional weaving patterns of the Sherdukpen community since she was just 13 years old. Her dedication and hard work have played a major role in keeping the weaving traditions of Shergaon alive. She first passed this precious knowledge to her daughter and later to many active weavers of the village. Apart from weaving, she has also been actively preserving traditional Sherdukpen songs through her melodious voice. Till today, she has recorded more than 20 folk songs in the Sherdukpen dialect. She remains a living repository of many rare and unique traditional songs and deeply worries about their preservation for future generations. Smt. Tsering Demo Thungon has also represented Shergaon in several documentary films that received recognition and awards at the state level, bringing pride and visibility to the community’s cultural heritage. With great humility, she has one heartfelt request for the younger generation of Shergaon. She is willing to teach the art of weaving and traditional songs to anyone who truly wishes to learn, provided they come forward with sincerity and dedication. People like her are not only preserving traditions, they are preserving the soul and identity of an entire community.
