Shergaon Traditional Crafts & Artisan Experience
About this Offering
Traditional crafts preserve artistic skills, practical knowledge, and cultural stories passed down through generations. This proposed experience aims to connect visitors with Shergaon’s artisans and introduce them to the techniques and meanings behind locally made objects.
Depending on participating artisans, visitors could observe traditional weaving, learn about materials and motifs, explore handcrafted bags and souvenirs, or attend an appropriate craft demonstration. Where available, artisans could explain how their skills are learned and maintained within the community.
One documented example is the initiative to revive Sherdukpen traditional wood-mask-making associated with the Bardo Chaam dance. Vanwasi Aadiwasi, Garung Thuk, and WTI have collaborated on this initiative, with support reported from Royal Enfield and Project Felis. Master artisan Pema Tashi led workshops to help preserve the craft.
This initiative provides a verified example of craft preservation, but it should not be interpreted as confirmation that mask-making workshops are regularly available to tourists.
Partners & Community Collaboration: Garung Thuk, participating artisans, and relevant craft-preservation organisations. For mask-making specifically, the documented initiative involved Vanwasi Aadiwasi and WTI, with reported support from Royal Enfield and Project Felis.
Visitor Information: Confirm participating artisans, workshop availability, materials, duration, fees, and any cultural restrictions.
